AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) - HAP Housing broke ground on a new affordable housing complex in Amherst on Monday.
HAP Housing's Executive Director says this project has been 26 years in the making.
Peter Gagliardi joined former Congressman John Olver in unveiling Amherst's newest affordable housing complex. The housing community, located on Olympia Drive, will be known as Olympia Oaks and feature 42 apartments for low and moderate income families.
Gagliardi says the complex meets a great need in the town because there's a lot of pressure on the real estate market in Amherst; which drives up rental and home sale prices.
“Lower income people, people working the lower paid jobs, can't afford to live here. And end up having to commute from significant distances in order to come to work. And what this provides is an opportunity to live in the community where they work,” Gagliardi told 22News.
To be considered, the household income for a family of four would need to be $49,140. Gagliardi says HAP Housing has already started taking names and has created a waiting list.
A lottery will be conducted weeks before the complex opens in October of next year. For more information e-mail Leaseup@haphousing.org
