NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - Massachusetts is among the top 20 states with the most expensive car insurance.
Out of 50 states, Massachusetts ranks 15 th in the country; the annual premiums are even higher than the national average.
But escaping the prices is nearly impossible; insurance is something all drivers need.
"We do some things for discounts, but we drive a lot. So we really can't do the low mileage. We have kids so we have to have collision," said Michael Grosso of Florence.
Some young drivers can catch a small break. "I know that because I had better grades [my parents] were able to get a discount," said 19-year-old driver Paeton Van Housen.
"Congestion, states who don't have overpopulation, too many vehicles on the road, their rates will be slightly less than highly populated states," said King inside his Rt. 5 office.
That's why Maine ranked lowest, because of its rural setting and fewer drivers. The U.S. Department of Transportation says there are over 4.5 million licensed drivers in Massachusetts. Maine has fewer than one million.
Insure.com also calculated premiums by averaging the rates of more than 750, 2013 model vehicles. King says the type of insurance you get also matters.
"So, based on the value of a vehicle, your collision and comprehensive premium, which is part of your policy, is affected. Liability coverage and premiums are the same based on the vehicle you drive, it's based on [the driver's] experience," said King.
Louisiana topped the list with the highest average annual premium of $2,699. Premiums in neighboring states like Rhode Island and Connecticut were also higher than Massachusetts.
