NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - 27 year old Rachel Holmes of Northampton was hit by a car driven by 33 year old Rigdhen Tezin of Florence around 6:15 on Tuesday evening. Holmes is recovering at Baystate Medical Center and is listed in fair condition, but Tezin has been charged with a crosswalk violation, unsafe operation of a motor vehicle, and expired inspection sticker.
Residents in Northampton told 22News they think the crosswalks can be very dangerous in their city. Susan Gerstle of Northampton said "I notice that when you're crossing, you have to stop and make sure that the cars see you and part of the problem is at night you're working black and it's hard to see you and the crosswalks are not well lit."
"I think the main problem is the lack of appropriate signage and lights. It's a situation where the cars and the pedestrians aren't sure what the drivers are supposed to do," Jeffrey Stylos of Northampton said.
Captain Scott Savino of the Northampton Police Department told 22News that, unfortunately, at least one pedestrian on average is hit in a crosswalk every year in Northampton.
