NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - It's prom season, and a lot of parents are shelling out a lot of money for their kids' big night.
How much? Try $1528; that's what Visa says is the average those who live in the Northeast will spend on prom this year. The figure represents a 41% increase from the regional average just two years ago.
Ci Ci Boutique Owner Cindy Hackworth says it's because the average price for a prom gown is now close to $400. She says when you add accessories, shoes, make-up, hair, limo, tickets and flowers, it's not hard to reach $1,000. Because of this, Hackworth says more prom-goers are putting items on layaway.
"The cost of the fabric has gone up, the cost of the bead work, the cost of the labor, the cost of shipping; it all goes up. So in the end, it all gets passed down to the consumer because my costs have gone up, too," Hackworth said.
Hackworth says parents here are better off than some down South. She says school districts in states like Kentucky are starting to host semi-formals as early as eighth or even sixth grade.
