NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - A Proposition 2 1/2 override question moved one step closer to a Northampton ballot Thursday night.
The Northampton City Council decided to vote on the measure June 20th. Mayor David Narkiewicz asked for the override in order to make up for a $1.5 million budget shortfall.
The mayor has said that without the increase in property taxes, 22 city jobs would be cut including several teachers and school staff.
If Northampton voters approve a proposal to raise taxes, it will be the city's third Proposition 2 1/2 override in the last four years.
