EASTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - The Hampshire County city of Easthampton is now, officially, home to a Cultural District.
Easthampton Mayor Michael Tautznik cut the ribbon Friday night on the "Cottage Street Cultural District". It's designed to encourage commerce and job growth.
Businesses in the cultural district hope to attract visitors who will spend money here.
"We're excited and we're hoping that it'll bring not only tourism, but interest in our street," said Jessica Coville from New England Felting Supply .
"Easthampton really represents everything that we want a cultural district to be," said Anita Walker, Executive Director of the Mass. Cultural Council. "There's activity. There's people. There's music. There's arts. There's shopping. There's food. It's a complete experience."
A cultural district is a compact, walkable area of a community with a concentration of cultural facilities, activities and assets. Easthampton, with its quaint shops, art galleries and night life, fits the bill.
