NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - Major changes on the Exit 19 off-ramp in Northampton are in the works, but some drivers don't think that the improvements will help.
Exit 19 empties out into a section of Rt. 9 in Northampton, right before the Calvin Coolidge Bridge, is known as a bottleneck; especially during peak traffic times. A Mass DOT spokeswoman told 22News that this project is in its design phase, and completion is still six years away.
It will cost an estimated $15 million, and the upgrades will include added lanes for drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists. Among the several recommendations is a roundabout, something drivers say will just make for a bigger problem.
"I'm a little bit leery of a roundabout just because we have a roundabout up in Greenfield. There are a lot of incidents there, a lot of accidents there. I know from my own personal experience," Doug Mayo of Greenfield said.
