SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (WWLP) - State, environmental and local police and firefighters are continuing their search for a five-year-old girl who fell into the Connecticut River Saturday night.
An eyewitness told State Police that they saw the girl fall off a dock behind a Cove Island Road home shortly after 9:00 Saturday night. The Northwestern District Attorney's office said several adults jumped in but couldn't find her.
State Police Trooper Todd Nolan told 22News that a team of at least six divers started a recovery mission on Sunday.
The river's current proved to be too strong and unmanageable Monday, and the divers planned on returning to the river on Tuesday. However, the divers have returned to the river Monday evening and have continued the search..
The girl's family was visiting relatives in South Hadley and traveled from California.
Environmental Police boats and State Police helicopters were seen canvassing the area on Monday. A state police dog was brought aboard one of the boats to assist with the search, as well.
