NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - Some UMass students will celebrate two different graduation ceremonies. They're known as rainbow, or lavender, graduations and they've been happening at UMass for the last 15 years.
Stonewall Center Director Genny Beemyn says the annual celebration recognizes students who are making a difference in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community.
This year, 22 undergraduate and graduate students were recognized in front of a crowd of 150 at the Campus Center. UMass was recently ranked among the Top 25 most LGBT friendly campuses in the country.
Director of the Stonewall Center, Gnny Beemyn, told 22News, "It's not that the college doesn't recognize or support them. It's a way really to have more of a recognition of the work that they do in the LGBT community and to be recognized among their friends and colleagues."
