AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) - Crowds across the nation gathered late Sunday night and early Monday morning to celebrate the death of terrorist leader Osama bin Laden. Here in Western Massachusetts, hundreds gathered outside of UMass Amherst to celebrate.
Students came out to the quad near the Southwest dorms chanting and waving signs right after the announcement from President Obama.
After several riots in the past after sports games, many were concerned that this gathering might get out of hand.
"There was a huge bonfire, there was all kinds of chanting," UMass freshman Samuel Warton said.
"There was a lot of ‘U-S-A!' a lot of patriotism," another student said.
Campus police told 22News that the crowd was broken up after a few hours, and no one got out of hand.
