NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - Every year, Massachusetts homeowners spend millions on home repairs, so it's important to get the right contractor for the job.
The 22News ITeam has exposed dishonest contractors cheating homeowners. Last year, home improvement contractors were among the top 5 consumer complaints in the state.
So, before you hire your next contractor, here's a short list of what to do to protect yourself. The state's Consumer Affairs Office urges you to:
- Interview at least three contractors
- Confirm references
- Ask for a detailed contract
- Check with the Office of Consumer Affairs to make sure the contractor is registered with the state.
General Contractor Daniel Schroder told 22News that a good reputation follows good contractors.
"Talk to other people, word of mouth. If other people have dealt with a contractor and they are happy, that's how we get all of our business," Schroder said.
Sally Bellerose of Northampton said that she is sure to "Ask lots of questions and interview more than one person or one firm."
