BELCHERTOWN, Mass. (WWLP) - Private boats have been banned from the Quabbin Reservoir for 45days.
Officials are concerned that outside boats could spread zebramussels which have been found in Laurel Lake in Lee.
Bill Pula, the Regional Director of the Quabbin Reservoir, told 22News that no zebra mussels have been found in the Quabbinyet.
But, they are still looking for them.
He said that they don't believe that the Quabbin's waterchemistry can support the growth of these mussels. Still, theyaren't take any chances.
The problem with zebra mussels is that they can attachthemselves to the reservoir's pipes and clog them.
Since the Quabbin is the water source for 2.5 million peoplein 50 different communities, the Department of Conservation andRecreation is doing everything they can to keep the mussels out.
But, you can still have fun at Quabbin without private boats. They have rental boats that cost $40 a day. You can also fish offthe shore line.
Pula told 22News that the mussels do not pose any health riskto the water. They just block the pipes.
