NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) - A New Bedford man is due in court Friday after an hours-long police standoff in which multiple gunshots were fired.
John Hernandez, 30, was taken into police custody Thursday. State and local police swarmed the Southcoast Condominiums on Richmond Street after reports of an armed man in the complex.
According to police, Hernandez barricaded himself in his apartment, and fired multiple gunshots out his window in the direction of police and rush hour traffic on Route 140.
Police were able to convince the suspect to surrender after about four hours. They told us he was upset about family issues that he'd been dealing with recently.
Hernandez is being charged with larceny of a firearm, carrying a loaded firearm, possession of a firearm without a license, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, and assault with intent to murder. He's scheduled to appear in court Friday.
