CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - A 22News I-Team investigation in February revealed that welfare receipts were using EBT money across the country; everywhere from Universal Studios Florida to an IMAX movie theater in California.
This week, a state audit revealed more than $4.5 million in out of state transactions warranted a Department of Transitional Assistance or DTA investigation.
The audit also showed that more than 1100 people, who were already dead, collected $2.9 million from the state's welfare system. In a majority of those cases, that money was spent.
John Langlois of Granby told 22News, "We don't just see that in the welfare system, we see it in all forms of government. Irrational spending that we just can't keep track off. I don't think it's just that agency that should be blamed."
The audit says the DTA has begun to address these problems.
