K-9 officer Nero recovering from shooting

WEST YARMOUTH, Mass. (WPRI) -  Four days after being injured in a shooting that killed his partner, Yarmouth police K-9 Nero is showing signs of recovery.

The 28-month-old Belgian Malinois was eating and walking Sunday, after having surgery Friday.

"The biggest struggle we're having medically is that he's having some arrhythmias in his heart; that's just after a shock event," said Louisa Rahilly of Cape Cod Veterinary Specialists, where Nero is recovering.

Yarmouth police posted "K9 NERO CONTINUES TO FIGHT BACK!" on the department's Facebook page Monday morning.

"The change in the last 12 to 15 hours has been remarkable," said former Yarmouth K9 handler Peter McClellan Sunday. He and other police officers have been keeping Nero company.

McClellan has known Nero since he was a puppy and introduced him to Officer Sean Gannon. Both Nero and Gannon were shot while serving a warrant in Barnstable's Marston Mills neighborhood Thursday,Gannon, a New Bedford native, died from his injuries at Cape Cod Hospital.

McClellan said that Gannon and Nero were great for each other personality-wise.

"Sean was a very laid back guy, and Nero had more of that in him than the wild side," McClellan said. "It was a perfect match and it was instant."

Nero's improvement is helping lift the spirits of both the police and the community as they mourn Gannon.

Yarmouth Police Chief Fred Fredrickson visited Nero Sunday.

"After having just a few moments with Nero, I walked out of there better than I walked in," Fredrickson said.
