CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - A major general with the Massachusetts National Guard told state lawmakers Wednesday that a plan to use state money to invest in the military protects our bases.
The proposal would use 177 million dollars in borrowed funds over five years to invest in projects at all six military bases. The first is a project to improve the runway at Barnes in Westfield.
Major General Scott Rice told the Housing Committee on Bonding that the investment keeps local bases from being on the chopping block as the Department of Defense continues to make cuts.
However, opponents say state money should not go to the military and instead be invested in other local projects.
