TAUNTON, Mass. (WPRI) - A Sunday evening on the Taunton River turned deadly for a Taunton man. Now, the man driving the boat is facing criminal charges.
Anthony Rose, 46, of Taunton was ordered held on $10,000 cash bail during his arraignment in Taunton District Court Monday morning.
Rose was charged with OUI homicide by vessel and negligent operation of a boat in the death of Manuel Pinheiro, 47, of Taunton.
According to the Bristol County District Attorney's Office, Rose was intoxicated while driving his boat at a high rate of speed on the Taunton River shortly before 6 p.m..
Pinheiro, a passenger on the boat, was struck in the head when the boat hit a tree that was protruding out of the water. Paramedics rushed Pinheiro to Morton Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police say Rose failed field sobriety tests and members of the Massachusetts Environmental Police placed him under arrest.
The district attorney's office said the matter was still under investigation.
