SPRINGFIELD, Mass (WWLP) - Is there a way to alert police from an ATM?
22News had been receiving a lot of emails saying you can type in your pin number in reverse at an ATM and it will give you your money and alert the police. This is a myth.
Springfield police Sgt. John Delaney confirmed this. It's an urban legend that has been going around the internet for a decade. One problem is that some people don't have reversible pins.
If your pin is for example, 5-5-5-5 or 5-8-8-5, those pin numbers are the same forward and backwards.
The Federal Trade Commission has studied a reverse PIN system and concluded it may not deter ATM crimes; the danger level could increase and could actually divert police from an actual crime because of a false alarm.
The best thing you can do is be aware of your surroundings and when possible use an ATM in a busy area with lots of people around.
