SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WWLP-WPRI) - A lockdown has been lifted at the University of Rhode Island, hours after police received a report of a gunman on campus.
Rhode Island State Police Col. Steven O'Donnell said that there was never a gun or an active shooter on the campus.
O'Donnell told our sister station, WPRI-TV , that a phone call came in at about 11:30 A.M. about a possible active shooter. State and local police descended upon the campus following the report, and searched every room in Chafee Hall; the building where the supposed shooter was located. None was found, though among the items discovered in the building was a Nerf gun.
He said that police are not treating the incident as a hoax, but believe one person's initial concern about a shooter spread fear, leading to the evacuation.
The campus remains on lockdown for about three hours, and all classes are canceled on the Kingston campus for this evening.
