CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - Selling horse meat is a practice that's been banned in this country for six years. However, it could make a comeback.
Horse slaughterhouses last operated in 2007, until congress banned the practice.
But on Wednesday, the USDA approved a slaughter operation in Iowa, and expects to endorse another request later this week. The Humane Society has now filed a lawsuit seeking to overturn the decision. 22News spoke to one South Hadley resident who says he's tasted horse meat.
Bruce Landry of Granby told 22News, "I can remember that the horse meat tasted better than the regular hamburger. And I was just a little kid at that time. "
The Humane Society lawsuit also opposes prospective plants in Montana, Tennessee and Oklahoma.
