TAUNTON, Mass. (WWLP) - The Mashpee Wampanoag tribe has signed a casino compact with the state that gives them an exclusive right to build in the southeastern part of the state.
The tribe says it has a plan to build in Taunton, but now, the State Gaming Commission is thinking about opening up that competition to commercial casino developers.
The reason is because some say the Wampanoag tribe faces too many obstacles, and wouldn't be able to open a casino for a decade. But the tribe disputes that, saying they'll be ready to open in 2015.
The gaming commission will make a final decision in the coming weeks.
