SPRINGFIELD, Mass (WWLP) - The tragedy in upstate New York has raised a lot of questions about security for first responders.
As authorities continue to figure out what prompted the attack on these firefighters, public safety officers across western Massachusetts are personally affected by this senseless act of murder of people who risk their own lives to help others.
"It's not something you can prepare for, or train for. The guys put their duty face on when they go to work. They have no idea what's going to happen every time the bell rings." said LT. Thomas Paquin.
Police say ex-con William Spengler shot and killed those two Webster firefighters this morning.
Spengler served more than 17 years in prison for beating his 92-year-old grandmother to death with a hammer in 1980, at the house next to where today's attack happened.
