BOSTON, Mass. (WWLP) - A state lawmaker is demanding to see why some welfare recipients are building up big EBT card balances.
Republican State Representative Shaunna O'Connell is being asked to pay 800 dollars to see public records on EBT card balances.
Since April, O'Connell has been asking the Department of Transitional Assistance to release data on EBT card balances during different stretches of time, including January through March of this year. The Taunton Republican's request was prompted by a Pittsfield store clerk who sent her a receipt showing an EBT card balance of roughly 7,000 dollars. The DTA is requesting $800 for 10 hours of work to retrieve the requested information.
"I am gong to pay this amount, I want to get the information, I think the taxpayers deserve the information so if they're going to charge me some ransom for it I'm going to pay it," said Representative Shaunna O'Connell.
O'Connell says she will use her campaign money to pay for the public data.
