NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (WWLP-AP) - The bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Worcester has been arrested for drunk driving in Rhode Island.
Our Providence sister station, WPRI-TV, reports that Bishop Robert McManus was arrested in Narragansett on Saturday evening.
Police told the Associated Press that McManus had been involved in a hit-and-run accident, and that the driver of the other vehicle had followed the Bishop, and called police, who arrested him at his nearby vacation house.
McManus is facing charges of driving under the influence, and refusing to take a chemical test. He will be arraigned on Tuesday.
The Bishop issued the following statement Monday on the Diocese of Worcester's website :
"On Saturday evening, May 4, I made a terrible error in judgment by driving after having consumed alcohol with dinner. There is no excuse for the mistake I made, only a commitment to make amends and accept the consequences of my action. More importantly, I ask forgiveness from the good people whom I serve, as well as my family and friends, in the Diocese of Worcester and the Diocese of Providence."
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Worcester includes all of Worcester County.
