TOM'S RIVER, NJ (CNN) - A six-year-old boy has died after he was shot by a four-year-old neighbor.
Police in Toms River, New Jersey are investigating how the younger child got the .22-caliber rifle from his family's home.
"The bullet went into his head." Danny Watkins is the uncle of the 6-year-old victim, accidentally shot by his 4-year-old friend. "Yeah, they're friends. They play together."
The call to police came in about 7:00PM Monday night, first as a BB gun accident.
Neighbors like this father we spoke with walking his young son was shocked to hear it was far worse. "You would think that the parents would have the guns at least locked up or something like that. I mean, I'm not against gun laws or anything like that but at least be responsible. If you're going to have the guns, be responsible."
Debbie Cotto, another neighbor saw the little boy being taken away on a stretcher. She and other neighbors here say authorities removed at least 10 other guns from the house. "I just don't understand why someone would have a loaded gun in the house. I think they have three children."
The ocean county prosecutor didn't comment on any other weapons removed from the home and says it's too soon to say whether any charges will be filed.
"There have been no decisions made one way or the other how we're going to proceed, other than the fact that we are collecting all of the facts. And, once we get all of the facts, we'll make a determination."
