BRUNSWICK COUNTY, VA (CNN) - Investigators in Virginia are working to identify five victims of a head-on, I-85 collision.
Police say the driver blamed for the fatal crash is among the dead. The man was apparently driving the wrong way on the freeway when he collided with another vehicle.
Police got the call for a driver going the wrong-way on the Interstate 85 in Brunswick around 5:45 in the morning. "The driver was in a red pick up truck, traveling northbound in the southbound lane."
They weren't able to locate the truck in time and this is the outcome. A head-on collision, police say between the pick-up and this car.
Investigators say driver of the truck and all four people in the car that he hit died right after impact. Police know the driver of the truck was a man. "The other four were burned beyond recognition."
Investigators are trying to piece together what led to this horrifying outcome. State police called a reconstruction team to the scene in an effort to map out the crash.
Sergeant Michelle Anya with the Virginia State Police says it's too early in their investigation to determine why or how the truck got on the wrong side of the interstate. "We do not know if alcohol, sleep deprivation, or what caused the accident."
No information has been released on the four people in the car. "Not until we can make identification and notification. We can't release any of that information."
