NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - State lawmakers are proposing bills to get development projects off the ground.
The city of Northampton is working with Mass Development on a project at the long abandoned Northampton state hospital.
Amherst State Senator Stanley Rosenberg filed a bill that allows the city to transfer property on the state-owned land to a developer.
The plan is to eventually have a hotel constructed there.
Another project is being proposed by the town of Amherst to develop an affordable housing project on Olympia Drive, which is located on UMass Amherst.
Senator Rosenberg filed a bill that allows the town to build on the university property.
"In consideration for the grants the town must bear any costs to the transaction, it must repair and maintain the public way. This one is somewhat timely, it was filed as an amendment to the housing bond bill," said Sen. Brian Joyce, Milton.
No one showed up to the state Legislature's bonding, capital expenditures and state assets committee to testify on the legislation.
The bills will now go to the Inspector General who will assess their cost.
