SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The Diocese of Springfield has decided to close five catholicschools in favor of creating a new academy in Springfield.
Today, Bishop Timothy McDonnell made the announcement followingthe advice after comprehensive study.
The committee, which was put in place by the Diocese, lookedinto the future of Catholic elementary and secondary schools inSpringfield.
The committee made its recommendation that all current Catholicelementary schools in Springfield be consolidated to creat a newsingle Catholic academy that consists of pre-school through gradeeight.
Bishop McDonnell accepted the recommendation and this Septembera new Catholic school will open in Springfield as St. Michael'sAcademy.
St. Michael's Academy will have three campuses.
A pre-school will be at the former Cathedral High School conventon Wendover Road.
Kindergarten through grade 5 will be at the current HolyokeCross School site.
A middle school consisting of grades 6 through 8 will be locatedat a reconfigured space at Cathedral High School.
