Runners brave freezing rain and strong winds at Boston Marathon

BOSTON (WWLP) - Rain-soaked runners took off from Hopkinton Monday morning for the 2018 Boston Marathon.

The heavy rain didn't stop the tens of thousands of athletes from competing in the Boston Marathon.

“Typically I don't get to run with Olympians so this is a treat,” said one participant told 22News.

The Boston Marathon is a Patriots Day tradition, held on the third Monday of April.

But the weather didn't feel like April. Boston Marathon runners had to deal with chilly rain and strong winds as they raced from Hopkinton to Boston.

Heavy rain came down all day at the marathon, but even that didn't stop the thousands of spectators who cheered on their loved ones participating in the race.

“I'm a history nut and I'm also an old track coach so yeah I'm wet but I got an umbrella this is going to be great this will be great to watch,” said Kurt Zabina of Nebraska.

Desiree Linden powered through the rain to become the first American to win the women's division in 23 years.

Japan's Yuki Kawauchi wore the wreath on the men's side.

Both first-place finishers took home a $150,000 top prize.

Most of these athletes train in all weather conditions including rain and snow.

“The days when it's dark rainy or stormy and you still go out and train,” said Scott Dunlap of Woodsnap, California. “That's what makes days like today easy. I train up in San Francisco on the trails all the time, this is great mud, wet yeah, I'm used to it.”

The 122nd Boston Marathon featured athletes from across the United States and 96 different countries.

Safety wasn't an issue at the Boston Marathon.

Police officers patrolled all along the race route to ensure a safe event for competitors and spectators.
