SHAWVILLE, Quebec (WWLP) - A moderate earthquake not far from Canada's capital was felt by some people across the Northeast on Friday morning.
The U.S. Geological Survey reports that a 5.0 magnitude quake centered outside Shawville, Quebec happened around 9:00 A.M. Shawville is located in the western part of the province, not far from the Canadian capital of Ottawa.
The USGS reports that the quake was felt by people across Quebec and Ontario provinces, as well as Vermont, Upstate New York, and northern Pennsylvania.
Quakes with a magnitude of 5.0 on the Richter scale are considered to be "moderate," but do not generally cause much damage. There are no reports of any damage in Canada at this time.
