CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - Over the last couple of days western Massachusetts has had to deal with some strong to severe thunderstorms.
There has been a lot of lightning with these storms but there are some things you can do to help protect your home.
Many times if lightning strikes nearby, an electrical surge can make it into your house. It can damage or even destroy electronics and electrical appliances.
If you have antennas or satellite dishes on your roof make sure they're grounded. That way if lightning hits it, the electricity will pass through the ground wire and into the ground instead of going into your home.
There are also some things you can do inside your home when a thunderstorm is approaching.
Joe Mignault of Deerfield told 22News, “We do have surge protectors on the TVs and the computers. We do pull the toaster and other items out as a precaution.”
Remember, if you’re outside you should always try and get inside a sturdy shelter if lightning is in the area.
