EAST LONGMEADOW, Mass. (WWLP) - A water main break near the East Longmeadow-Springfield line has shut down a nearly one mile-long stretch of Parker Street.
Water began coming up from underneath the road at the intersection of Allen St. and Parker Streets around 3:00 Monday morning.
The Department of Public Works is there, working to clean up the break, but currently the break is affecting traffic in that area. Parker Street is currently closed between the intersections of Parker and Allen, and Parker and Porter Road.
The Department of Public Works explained to 22News that a water main break in on specific spot can cause water to billow up in several different spots, because the water travels to weak spots in the asphalt to escape. That's exactly what happened at the Allen Street intersection Monday morning, Roy Esposito of the Department of Public Works, told 22News.
Esposito told 22News just before 7:00 Monday morning that they have located the spot where the break happened and will need repair. The DPW has turned off the water to the section of Parker St., from Allen St. to Orchard Rd. They expect to turn that back on sometime this afternoon.
