A tribute to Springfield’s Black Patriots Saturday afternoon.
Dozens gathered at the Griswold Theatre on AIC’s campus in observance of Black History Month with a special thank you to local Black veterans.
The event also commemorated 400 years of Black Americans being present in our country. 22News spoke with one veteran about the importance of events like this.
“I would say it’s way overdue,” said Curtis Bosworth. “For the community to get together and recognize the effort that African Americans put in. Maybe we can do this once a month instead of focusing on the month of February.”
Springfield’s Black Gold Star families and combat veterans were also honored during the ceremony.
Mayor Domenic Sarno and other local leaders were in attendance.
