Free college class for families of lower-income communities

Mass Appeal

Brian Boyles, from Mass Humanities, and his student, Audrey McCloud, told us about a program at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Family Center that offers a free college-credited course for adults.

“Adults from low-income communities in Springfield can take free college-accredited classes in the humanities at the Martin Luther King Jr. Family Center through the Clemente Course in the Humanities. Mass Humanities oversees and funds the Course in five Mass. cities. Students take American history, art history, literature, philosophy, and writing over the course of one academic year. The classes in Springfield are taught by highly qualified faculty members from UMass Amherst. Students who complete the Course with a high level of achievement receive 6 transferable credits from Bard College”
