Key U.S. literacy statistics:
- 21% of adults in the US are illiterate
- 54% of adults have a literacy below 6th grade level
- 66% of 4th grade children could not read proficiently
- 2/3 of students who cannot read proficiently by 4th grade will end up in jail or on welfare
