The Matzah-ppeal Matzah Ball Cookoff!

We host our first ever Matzah-ppeal Matzah Ball Cookoff, with Jewish Federation CEO Stew Bromberg. 

Grandma Edie’s Recipe:


  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup matzo meal
  • 4 eggs
  • 4 tablespoons seltzer


  • Put eggs in a food processor or blender and mix them inside
  • Then add the butter and blend again
  • Mix in the matzo meal, and then the seltzer
  • Refrigerate over night
  • Scoop out with a spoon into your hand (wet your hand first) and roll into a ball – place in pot of boiling water
  • Keep in boiling water for 15 minutes, and then bring it to a medium heat and cook for 15 more minutes
  • When ready, it will float, and the inside should be almost the same color as the outside

Stew’s Recipe:


  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 4 Eggs
  • 1/3 cup Veggie oil
  • 1/4 tsp Pepper
  • 4/3 cups Matzo meal
  • 1 tbsp BP


  • Fill large stockpot 3/4 full of water, add 1 tbsp salt – bring to a boil
  • While water is boiling, cracks eggs in large bowl and beat well
    • Add oil, salt, and pepper – slowly fold in matzo meal and mix untill completely blended
  • Refrigerate for 20 minutes
  • Wet hands and shape perfect balls, 4/3 inches in diameter (they double in size when cooked)
  • Gently place in boiling water and reduce to simmer
  • Cook for 25 minutes
  • Add to soup, use slotted spoon
