Cold Weather Safety Tips – We’ve got another month of winter ahead of us, and this is when the worst weather tends to kick in! Here are some winter safety tips to keep in mind for your pets:
Watch the snow pile-ups in your backyard – if snow piles accumulate near your fences, your dog could hop up – and over! Be sure your pup doesn’t have this escape route handy
Never give your dog a shave or severe haircut in winter -they need the warmth of their fur!
Before you open your car door, give the hood a thump. There could be a heat-seeking animal like a cat inside there
After a walk, check your pet’s feet and stomach for ice, salt and chemicals. If you find it, wash it off and dry your pet’s fur. Check also for cracks in your dog’s paw pads or redness between their toes
Feed your pet just a little bit extra in the winter months to provide important calories. Pets burn extra energy in their efforts to keep warm. Be sure to have fresh water on hand so they stay well-hydrated, too
Be sure your companion has a warm place to sleep, off the floor and away from drafts. A cozy dog or cat bed with a warm blanket or pillow is ideal
