22News travels to Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island with local teachers

Dozens of school teachers and administrators from western Massachusetts are taking part in an educator’s workshop at the United States Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, South Carolina.

The Educator’s Workshop will give them an inside look at how the Marine Corps prepares the few and the proud men and women who sign up to serve our country.

Our 22News crews flew out early Tuesday morning to South Carolina along with Marine sergeants and dozens of men and women taking part in this week’s workshop.

Chicopee High School and Chicopee Comprehensive High School are two schools from western Massachusetts that made the trip.

One Chicopee High School English teacher told 22News this experience will allow her to teach her students something they can’t learn in the classroom.

“Learning about resilience and effort and seeing that in a place that’s so different than a classroom, and being able to teach my students about that is really exciting to me,” Chelsea Orifice said.

Orifice told 22News many of her students are interested in learning more about the armed forces.

Some of this week’s events include confidence courses and multiple demonstrations from the Marines on base.
