AGAWAM, Mass. (WWLP) – Three Agawam Police officers were put on administrative leave after allegedly using excessive force on a man they arrested.

Wednesday, the Mayor had a civil service hearing with the officers and their union attorney John Connor. The incident dates back to June 19th, when three officers were recorded by police headquarters cameras.

Agawam Police Chief Eric Gillis said that after watching the video, he placed the officers on leave and notified Mayor Richard Cohen and the Hampden County DA’s Office.  Independent investigators then submitted recommendations to the Mayor.  The Officers names, the report, nor the video have been released to the public.

Connor says the video shows a man who had been arrested at Six Flags for assaulting officers and continued to do so in a cell at the Agawam police station.

John Connor, Attorney for the Officers told 22News, “So at points he had them in a headlock, he threw punches, there’s no question this person was assaultive, and under the rules and policies of the department the officers are authorized to use reasonable force in order to gain control of the arrestee, and that’s what they did, and they reacted actually textbook in terms of how they reacted to the situation.”

The Mayor told 22News he is still reviewing the evidence. Connor said if there are any disciplinary actions, they will appeal through arbitration or through civil service. No word on when the Mayor will be making his decisions, but we will keep you updated.
