Five people are dead after what authorities are describing as “an incident that involved a home fire” on Home Road in Sheffield early Wednesday morning.
The Berkshire District Attorney’s Office told 22News the sheriff’s office received a call about an active structure fire at 1343 Home Road around 7:50 a.m., which several fire and mutual aid agencies responded.
Crews initially found one person dead after searching the home when the fire was extinguished. Further investigation revealed four other people who were also dead.
The identity of the victims and the causes of their deaths have not been released at this time.
“This is an ongoing, extensive investigation with multiple local and state agencies, including the State Police assigned to the Office of the State Fire Marshal and detectives from the State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Berkshire District Attorney’s Office,” DA Andrea Harrington, stated at a news conference.
State Police Crime Scene investigators, forensic scientists, the accident reconstruction unit, as well as nearby police and fire departments, were called in to assist with the investigation.
