BOSTON (WWLP) – An advocacy group wants to make registering to vote a lot easier in Massachusetts.

After a successful roll out of early voting here in Massachusetts, the group Common Cause plans to push for legislation to establish automatic voter registration next year.

Several states are experimenting with automatic registration including Alaska, California, Connecticut, Oregon, West Virginia and Vermont. Many states go through the Registry of Motor Vehicles as a way to contact eligible residents to register to vote.

More than four-and-a-half million Massachusetts residents were eligible to vote in the November elections, but as many as 700-thousand people didn’t register.

Lt. Governor Karyn Polito told 22News, “If there are opportunities to make voter registration more available while maintaining the integrity of the system and the process, that’s something that we’ll have to take a look at.”

The Secretary of State’s office oversees elections in Massachusetts. Their spokesman told 22News they plan to see how states like Connecticut roll out automatic voter registration before implementing it here.
