SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A lot of work goes into putting the annual Parade of the Big Balloons together, and part of that is preparing the balloons themselves.
Friday morning, workers were busy inflating the Cat in the Hat and the other giant balloons along Lyman Street, near the start of the parade route. Crew members got there at 4:30 to make sure everything was just right before they could begin inflating some of these characters. The supervisor of this event, Scott Young, told 22News there are specific steps they have to take when handling the balloons.
“Get the road closed off and line it with plastic stuff so when we put the balloons down, they don’t get damaged,” Young said. “I’ve been up here for the past five years doing this and every year it’s been pretty good.”
Young also told 22News the entire process to fill the balloons usually takes five hours, but that took a little bit longer Friday morning, because they had trouble getting the helium truck to work.
