Big Y stores no longer allowing customers under 21 to buy tobacco products

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Starting Monday, people under the age if 21 will no longer be able to buy tobacco products at Big Y stores.

According to a news release sent to 22News, beginning June 17 you must be 21-years-old or older to buy tobacco products from any Big Y store including Fresh Acres Market, Table and Vine, and Big Y express and gas stations.

Big Y stores in Massachusetts already require customers to be 21 or older due to a new law that went into effect on January 1. Connecticut stores have not raised the minimum age as the state does not have the same law. However, Connecticut is expected to increase its age requirement to buy tobacco products to 21 in October.

Big Y said this was part of the reason for the change, to take “the initiative to get ahead of this law in order to have a consistent policy for all of their stores across the two states.”

As part of the change, Big Y has re-emphasized its training programs to reinforce age verification through its electronic system. Big Y said the system is a computerized training program for all cashiers with an easy reference calendar to verify the age of a customer purchasing tobacco.

Signs will also be placed in several areas throughout each store.
