PITTSFIELD, Mass. (NEWS10) – Pittsfield Police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found in a trash container behind a Tyler Street business Saturday afternoon.

Investigators believe that 22-year-old Louis Ely climbed into the dumpster. Foul play is not suspected in his death.

“I’ve been here 10 years so and I’ve never had to worry,” said witness Penny Stockley.

Penny Stockley is now a little concerned after what she saw outside her home late Saturday afternoon.

“I was in the house cooking. A fire truck pulled up first,” said Stockley.

Then came an ambulance, several police cars, and a coroner.

“I saw them go toward the dumpster. They were looking in the dumpster,” said Stockley.

Stockley says a dumpster they surrounded is behind an apartment complex at 771 Tyler Street. The Berkshire County District Attorney David Capeless says Pittsfield Police found a dead man’s body in a dumpster off that street.

For Stockley, it’s surprising that something like this happened in her neighborhood.

“There’s been you know fights out here but nothing big, “said Stockley.

She always sees people digging out cans from the dumpster.

“Maybe someone was looking in the dumpster and they fell, cause I’ve seen a guy that he looks in that dumpster all the time and he goes inside of it,” said Stockley.

While police are not saying what Ely was doing in the dumpster, Stockley says this discovery, next to her home, is worrisome.

“I mean it’s a little worrying but could have been an accident,” said Stockley.

An autopsy was conducted Sunday and the cause of death are pending further toxicological and other testing.MAP: 771 Tyler Street Pittsfield, Mass.
