BRIMFIELD, Mass. (WWLP)– A man has died in a fire in Brimfield on 3rd street Thursday night.

Massachusetts State Fire Marshal spokesman Jake Ostroskey confirmed with 22News that an adult male lost his life in a fire that started around 5p.m. Thursday evening.

“On behalf of the Brimfield Fire Department, I want to express my deepest condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones,” said Brimfield Fire Chief Don Contois. “This is a terrible time of year to suffer such a tragedy, and our hearts go out to them.”

While the fire does not appear suspicious, the cause is still being investigated. One other person living in the home is getting assistance from the Red Cross of Massachusetts. While the fire was put out in an hour, the home is still a total loss.

“It’s still too early to say how and where this fire began, but we know that smoke alarms and a home escape plan are everyone’s first line of defense against a fire at home,” said State Fire Marshal Ostroskey. “Please take a minute to be sure that your alarms are in place and working properly, and that everyone knows two ways out of the home.”

The towns of Brookfield, Charlton, Holland, Palmer, Southbridge, Sturbridge, Monson, and Wales, provided aid with the effort to put out the fire. The town of Warren also helped put out the fire and provided station coverage.
