HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – Dozens of people took giant steps Sunday to honor the memory of 17-year-old Springfield murder victim Kathryn Mauke.
Since the Sabis International Charter School senior was stabbed to death in February, allegedly by her former boyfriend, Kathryn’s family has wanted to establish a college scholarship in her name, to be awarded to a Sabis student.
On Sunday, friends gathered for the inaugural “celebrate Kate 5K fundraiser at Ashley Reservoir in Holyoke.
Family friend Courtney Boron, who organized the event, told 22News “we have so many people that care about Kathryn and the cause, and it has become such a great day to have that support around us.”
Organizers are confident Sunday’s fund raiser took a positive step towards raising their scholarship funding goal in memory of Kathryn.
