As we head into the winter season, you may want to have your heating systems checked.
Heating equipment is one of the leading causes of home fire deaths, and people can take precautions to prevent them.
To keep your home safe:
- Keep three feet of space around space heaters
- Use the right type of fuel for your equipment, and
- Get appliances serviced heading into the winter
Matt Marchand of the Northampton Fire Department told 22News, the importance of checking your heating systems prior to usage.
“Appliances have for the most part been sitting all summer long not be ing utilized, and haven’t been cleaned or serviced,” said Marchand. “So it’s extremely important to have a trained technician come out and service any sort of heating appliance, have chimneys cleaned again by a trained professional.”
Testing your smoke alarms once a month can also help keep you and your family safe this winter.
