CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – The Chicopee Fire Department is still working to determine what caused the fire at the former Uniroyal tire factory Monday night.

Chicopee Fire Lt. Katie Collins-Kalbaugh told 22News a passerby called 911 after seeing flames coming from the abandoned tire plant just after 9:00 p.m.

Collins-Kalbaugh said crews got there with two ladder trucks in just one minute and were able to put out the fire quickly.

“It was an excellent decision because the winds could have made it disastrous,” she said.

There were no injuries.

Uniroyal has been closed since the 1980s, with parts of the complex put to other uses over the last few decades.
