CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – The Chicopee Fire Department is mourning the loss of one of their own.
Fire Chief Dean Desmarais announced on Friday that 47-year-old Firefighter Anthony Spano died suddenly on Thursday. He said Spano collapsed while exercising.
Spano was a 14 year veteran firefighter and EMT. He was assigned to Station 5 in the Willimansett Section of the City. He leaves behind his son Joseph, his father Stephen and other family members.
Deputy Fire Chief Wayne Lemay told 22News Spano enjoyed participating in outdoor fitness races, like Battle Frog and won several medals.
Chief Desmarais said Spano was a dedicated firefighter that will be missed; “Within the department and its ranks, it’s going to be a void. But it’s also going to be a void in all of our hearts for Tony. That’s our brother and sisterhood. That void will be there forever.”
In his honor, Saturday’s Chicopee Firefighters ball, has been named in his memory. Funeral arraignments are still pending.
