Chicopee police warning residents about phone scheme

News

Chicopee police are warning residents about another phone scheme.

A 90-year-old woman gave $8,000 to schemers after she was told she had won a prize from Publishers Clearing House.

Chicopee police said the woman almost gave another $16,000 to the schemers before her family was able to intervene.

Police said once the woman stopped responding to the schemers, they even went so far as sending a locksmith to the woman’s house. Police believe it was so the people behind the scam could get inside.

Theresa Rees of Springfield told 22News that the lengths scammers will go to doesn’t surprise her. She said, “They know the elderly don’t think quick on their feet. They’re homebodies, they have somebody caring for them in the first place. They just seem like easy targets.”

Chicopee police are asking people to speak with their older friends and relatives, and remind them to be suspicious whenever someone they don’t know is asking for money or payments.
